Marwell Zoo 10K Race - Public Address Team Fundraising

pasIn May each year Marwell Zoo in association with the Eastleigh Running Club organise a 10 Kilometre Road Race (that's about six and a half miles).

The first event in the morning is the KIDDIES race which starts around a circuit on the roads inside the zoo.
This is extremely popular because not only do all runners get a medal for entering, all the members in the families that accompany them, get a free entry pass into the Zoo. This means that children's rides on that day are absolutely going full swing with plenty of joyful screams and yells from the happy youngsters enjoying themselves. In fact the 2006 books had to be closed early as they were oversubscribed!

pasAt 11am on a spring sunday morning the big boys and girls set off on their gruelling 10k race which starts off in the Zoo, goes out around the surrounding roads and then ends up at the finishing point back inside the Zoo grounds.

All the runners receive a medal (well they do deserve it!) and there are also serious prizes for the fastest three young boys and the quickest three young girls on the day, as well as senior prizes.

pasIt is mainly a family event where local runners can enjoy running a circuit that is unique in its location and very special to the organisers. However it also part of the Eastleight Running Club events calender, as well as a fun day for kids. All the funds raised on the day go towards helping with the upkeep of the animals in the zoo.

There are more than 1,000 runners so if each runner brings along their family, you can see that the facilities are going to be at full stretch but the Zoo management are well organised to cater and control such a crowd (with our help).

pasThat's where we come in. The hospital radio public address volunteers turn out in force to announce the winners and to help the organisers run the event, with the fee for their services going towards the running costs of our radio station.

We don't try to broadcast the event live as a road race commentary doesn't come across as a very entertaining radio programme.
